Research shows that the chances of complications are minimal at best. However, there are a few to note:
- Guillain-Barré syndrome (a paralysis disorder)
I couldn’t help but notice that many of the potential complications are neurological in origin. Curious, I visited the CDC website to scope out the vaccine’s ingredients. Below is the table directly from the CDC, detailing the ‘antigens’ contained in the flu vaccination.
|Type of Ingredient||Examples||Purpose|
|Preservatives||Thimerosal (only in multi-dose vials of flu vaccine)||To prevent contamination|
|Adjuvants||Aluminum salts||To help stimulate the body’s response to the antigens|
|Stabilizers||Sugars, gelatin||To keep the vaccine potent during transportation and storage|
|Residual cell culture materials||Egg protein||To grow enough of the virus or bacteria to make the vaccine|
|Residual inactivating ingredients||Formaldehyde||To kill viruses or inactivate toxins during the manufacturing process|
|Residual antibiotics||Penicillin, sulfa drugs||To prevent contamination by bacteria during the vaccine manufacturing process|
While all of the ingredients are questionable, these two are the ones that stood out the most:
Thimerisol: A compound composed of at least 50% mercury, has been linked to autisim and a miriad of neurological conditions
Formaldehyde: A chemical used in building materials and household products. Classified as a known carcinogen (cancer-causing agent). Many research studies have shown that workers exposed to formaldehyde are at risk for developing several cancers – including leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer. How lovely.
The body is extremely complex and very intelligent. When given the right condition, it has an amazing ability to heal. Our immune system was designed to protect us from illness. I don’t ever recommend flu vaccinations to my patients, but the decision is always up to them.
